Sugar, Melasma, and AGE-ing

By on July 8, 2013

“Skin science appears to have caught up with the humble sugar molecule. Wrinkles, sagging skin, and pigment deposits may stem less from the sun and more from one-way sugar molecules that we make as part of the aging process but cannot remove. With no small amount of serendipity, scientists call these wrong-way sugars ‘AGE Molecules’ (the AGE stands for ‘Advanced Glycation End-products).”  ~Dr. Peter J. D’Adamo, ND, Author of Eat Right For Your Blood Type~

A bitter sweet, so-called treat. SUGAR DOES NOT EQUAL LOVE – it turns to fat in our blood, feeds infection, and ages us quickly via our taste buds. The good news is… since we crave what’s in our blood, getting that clean helps the cravings go away! We’re all guilty of having a sweet tooth at one time or another, and some more than others (and for a variety of reasons). In writing about melasma (patches of dark skin appearing on the face) recently, and reading over the edited sugar chapter (for 2nd edition) of my book Ageless Aging this past week, I realized that I failed to mention sugar as a cause of pigmentation (though I mention it in both books).

Sugar does to our skin what air does to a cut apple or potato… it oxidizes it. It is an INFLAMMATORY – this, being a well known cause of PAIN. When it comes to our appearance, notice what happens when you eat a lot of sugary foods before bedtime – you wake up puffy. The inflammation carries over to your blood vessels, which increases the damaging plaque that builds up in your arteries. Imagine what this does to your heart and brain? Does a heart attack, stroke, or a blood clot ring a bell? Sure, there can be more than one reason for dis-ease (and a declining appearance) BUT, diet is by far the major culprit. Knowing when to say NO to your taste buds and yes to your optimal body, brain, and beauty are key. As is, taking a few seconds to ask yourself… will eating (or drinking) this help me look and feel better or worse? This is simply powerful, and has helped me on more than one occasion.

Melasma/dark spots and declining health are reason enough to read labels. If that doesn’t do it, perhaps the yo-yo effects of your skin stretching and shrinking will. How many times will you allow your skin to stretch? This is a sure way to get wrinkles sooner than later, and doesn’t stop on the face! From head to toe, sugar can puff us up. And not to single out sugar either, the wrong types of salt can do this, especially certain soy sauces. If you find yourself craving sugar and salt, consider why. There are many reasons to crave sugar… parasites are one (especially when they’re dying). An unbalanced meal and stress are two more. Getting to the root cause of any chronic symptom, ailment, or dis-ease is a gift that keeps giving your body, mind, and spirit life.

“Traditional Chinese Medicine views the desire for sugar, or the sweet flavor, as a craving for the mother (yin) energy, a craving that represents a need for comfort or security.”   ~Elson Haas, M.D., Author and Speaker on Nutrition & Detoxification. Many books including: The NEW Detox Diet~

**salt and spicy, on the other hand are a craving for the father energy.
