Intermittent Fasting To Eat Less And Ache Less

By on September 26, 2013

As crazy as it may seem, IT WORKS (and helps more than just pain). Since I began proper food combining and eating according to my body’s natural clock, I no longer wake up hungry (or with a back ache). I discovered that if and when I do eat a lot late, not only do I wake up hungry and puffy, my low back aches. A vicious cycle that didn’t leave me feeling or looking my best.

In camping 4 days this past weekend, I was a tad disgusted to see the amount of food eaten from sun up to sun down by many. Come morning, they’d complain of a backache (as they ate another heavy breakfast). I understand not sleeping in your own bed can cause a backache, but… I also know that sleeping amongst Mother Nature, on or near the ground has an anti-inflammatory effect. Since I was the oddball and only barefoot one in the bunch, I did not mention. Instead, I shared when asked.

I was pleasantly surprised by a few that did show interest in my way of thinking/living/eating. Equally surprised were those that decided to partake in a meal and snacks I shared. Explaining how eating less could benefit them in many ways was not something I was about to rain on their camping parade about (unless asked).

Overeating as a common pastime is not healthy (to say the least). It reminds me of a cow grazing before being butchered. It will lead to dis-ease and possible surgery. The newly named binge eating disorder is no reason to think you can’t reverse. It’s easy to break the binging cycle by simply eating according to your body’s natural cleansing cycle. Breaking the Fast (BreakFast) is naturally built-in! Any fast, long or short should begin and end by weaning on and off food (for best results and fewer side effects). The following are two circadian rhythm schedules – they are what nature intended for optimal health, performance and speed. So simple, so effective, yet so ignored.

  • Cleansing cycle – 5 a.m. to noon
  • Nourishing cycle – noon to 7 p.m.
  • Gathering cycle – 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.

  • Elimination (of body waste and food debris) – 4 a.m. to noon
  • Appropriation (eating and digesting takes place) – noon to 8 p.m.
  • Assimilation (absorption and use of foods) – 8 p.m. to 4 a.m.

Fasting over night or longer will include side effects, some that mimic low blood sugar. However, done properly, the benefits outweigh the side effects. An extended nightly fast is what I’ve been doing for more than 2 decades now. I’ve since seen it referred to as, The Warrior Diet or Intermittent Fasting. It has gained in popularity for the benefits it bring.

My intermittent fast begins after dinner (around 7pm) and goes until 11AM or so the next day. Thats 16 hours of not eating – leaving an 8-hour window for eating. Each day starts with drinking 20-40 ounces of water (after brushing teeth), then waiting a half hour or so. Next comes my green tea, followed by powdered vitamins either in water, juice, or a smoothie. If I’m still hungry, I’ll eat some fruit or toast with butter, almond butter and sometimes topped with sliced banana. If I need to leave during this time, I’ll bring them along and/or a raw bar, such as a long time favorite, Rawvolution. This is the basis of intermittent fasting . It does wonders for not waking up hungry and helping your body eat only when hungry. **Please know… this is not written in stone – variations happen. This is why I say I eat healthy most hours of day, and days of week. I also don’t eat the same thing every morning.

If you decide to try, and lunch or brunch is your largest meal, have a lite early dinner. If dunch (lunch/dinner) or is your largest meal, then perhaps a healthy snack or dessert no later than 6-7PM. Tea or water after that will begin to hold you over until morning, especially if whole foods are eaten.. It’s that easy and so worth it! It helps make dieting, bloating, back aches and more a thing of the past.

Because overeating can be cause more than what feels like a backache, I will save that for another post.
