Skin Cancer and Tanning – The UV Addiction

By on July 9, 2013

Skin cancer, like lung cancer just aren’t enough to stop some from tanning or smoking. It is no secret that smoking and FrankenFoods (fast, processed, packaged foods) are addicting, but TANNING?! Habitual tanners are like those that jump on their scale every day. A habit that causes their vanity to lead to insanity. In helping some clients, it didn’t matter what they looked like or how their clothes fit – if their scale said they were overweight, they were. Not owning a scale can do wonders for your body, mind, spirit, and sanity.

My one trip to a tanning bed landed me with a bad case of hives. Working construction in the Arizona desert (at the time) made it even more miserable, a summer I will never forget. I did not tan for vanity sake, I needed to get rid of tan lines for a wedding I was in. I was never a sun worshiper, though as a child I loved lying on the grass (in the sun) when I didn’t feel well. The sun and earths grounding effects always helped me feel better. Perhaps the very reason I love barefoot walking and the smell of wet dirt/grass… brings back wonderfully warm memories!

Tanning bedStudies have shown low Vitamin D has been linked to depression. And now, evidence shows the habit of tanning is more than vanity – skin cells exposed to UV light (in a culture) produce the feel good molecules known as endorphins. But, just as a tanning bed can help you feel better, the sun can do the same.

I don’t encourage lying out in the sun for hours on a regular basis. Perhaps exercising or gardening in it is all you need. There are times of day that are better for sun worshiping skin safety. If I remember correctly, it is NOT between the hours of 10am and 4pm. If it’s the feel good effect you’re after, consider good ol’ fashioned Vitamin D from the sun or a really good quality supplement. The gods know I avoid the sun like the plague (after having worked in it for 7 years), which could be why my Vitamin D levels were low. I now take Garden of Life Vitamin Code Raw D3 5000 Multivitamins, 60 Count, though it is also available in 2000 IU. I mustn’t forget my handy dandy D-Minder app – an app that helps track and manage the real Vitamin D… sun exposure. And although rather cool, I forget to use. A few of my friends do and love it.

Above all, it is in being happy with our god given colors (skin and hair). No amount of tanning or hair color can truly create long lasting inner peace or happiness. That, as we know is an inside job.

“The truest characters of ignorance are vanity and pride and arrogance.”  ~Samuel Butler~
